LOWELL, Mass. — Just weeks before students return to the classroom, an anonymous tip into the Boston 25 newsroom raised concern about a possible rodent problem over at Roger Stem Academy in Lowell.
The tip claims that in the past year, rodents have been spotted in the hallways, offices and alleges teachers are having nightmares--some even scared to enter the classrooms. It draws concern about students and staff returning this fall.
Below is the prepared statement given to Boston 25 News by Superintendent Liam Skinner:
“We are aware of a rodent issue at the STEM Academy. The City of Lowell Health Department inspected the building this week and have confirmed there is not a rodent “infestation”, although there are some issues. There has been an uptick in road work and construction in the area that is displacing rodents. The Health Department identified a garden and compost area behind the building that is likely a contributing factor, and it has been removed. Additionally, other mitigation efforts, including ensuring that no food is left in classrooms and that any food in the school is stored in hard plastic rodent-resistant containers, have been recommended and implemented. As always, the health and safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Our facilities staff will continue working closely with the Health Department to monitor the situation as we move through the rest of the summer and prepare for the upcoming school year.”
City Manager Thomas Golden tells Boston 25 an integrated pest management specialist is currently addressing the presence of mice.
