Car crashes into headstones at Melrose cemetery

MELROSE, Mass. — Police are investigating a crash at a cemetery in Melrose Saturday afternoon.

The crash was reported at Wyoming Cemetery around 2:30 p.m.

Police say the vehicle, an older model Range Rover, knocked over eight headstones. The driver was identified as a 53-year-old Melrose woman with her learner’s permit. She was practicing driving at the time of the crash and was with a relative, who is a licensed driver, according to police.

Both people inside the car were uninjured.

Police say the headstones were successfully uprighted by the Department of Public Works. They believe the woman lost control of the SUV before crashing into the headstones.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
