On the eve of Friday’s trade deadline, the Boston Bruins again proved they’re ten toes in for a cup run, acquiring forward Tyler Bertuzzi from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a pair of draft picks.
Bruins shipped out a top-10 protected first-rounder in 2024 and a 2025 fourth-round pick.
The added wing depth comes after the Bruins sustained two injuries blow in the past week.
Winger Taylor Hall was placed on long-term IR Thursday morning. Hall didn’t play in either of the Bruins’ games against the Edmonton Oilers or Calgary Flames this week after sustaining a lower-body injury at some point during the team’s west coast road trip. The move frees up $6 million in cap space.
The Bruins’ depth was dealt another blow on Tuesday when Nick Foligno had to make an early exit. The forward shuffled off the ice hunched over and grimacing after a collision with Calgary’s Nikita Zaduro and did not return to the game. The Athletics’ Fluto Shinzawa reported Foligno was favoring his right leg when the team exited the Saddledome. Folino was placed on injured reserve Thursday morning.
Bertuzzi has struggled to stay on the ice this season, breaking his hands on two separate occasions. But when the 28-year-old is able to suit up, Bertuzzi has thrived as a playmaker on Detroit’s top line, notching four goals and 10 assists in 29 games this year.
Bertuzzi will be an unrestricted free agent at season’s end.
The NHL’s trade deadline is at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
