BOSTON — Police have identified the man charged in a deadly stabbing that left two women dead and a dog badly hurt after a stabbing attack inside a home on Taft Street in Dorchester.

Marcus Chavis, 34, of Dorchester will be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges of murder, two counts, and animal cruelty, police said.

It happened shortly before 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

One of those women was pronounced dead on scene. The other died after being taken to Boston Medical Center.

Police said two young children found by detectives at the disturbing scene were not injured.

“Right now, it’s an active and ongoing investigation,” said Deputy Superintendent Victor Evans, declining to share any additional information.

Neighbors said one of the women who died was grandmother who lived on the first floor of the triple decker.

“When I first moved in, I invited her to my cookout. Ever since then, she was the lady who said ‘Hi sweetheart, hey baby,’” said neighbor Danny O’Donoghue.

O’Donoghue said the other woman killed was his neighbor’s adult daughter who was visiting.

He said the man taken into custody is a relative of theirs who does not live at the home.

“I did speak [with him] two weeks ago. He did tell me about how he was feeling, very troubled on the inside,” recalled O’Donoghue. “He wasn’t feeling good and confident about his life… I had no idea he’d be a danger to anyone in the house.”

O’Donoghue and other neighbors said they didn’t hear anything out of the ordinary on Sunday morning prior to police swarming the neighborhood.

Investigators have not speculated on a motive. As of Sunday night, no formal charges had been announced in the case.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
