BOSTON — Boston has been ranked among the “loneliest” cities in America, according to a new study.

The study analyzed Census Bureau data across more than 170 cities with a population of at least 150,000 in order to find the places that have the most residents who live alone, according to Chamber of Commerce researchers.

“Our analysis looked at the number of one-person households in each city as well as the number of males and females living in one-person households,” researchers said. “To determine the average yearly increase, we analyzed 2016-2021 one-person household data.”

Boston checked in at the 30th loneliest city. Among Boston’s 271,941 households, 38.3 percent or 104,215 are occupied by one person, data showed.

Researchers noted that Boston is also a lonely city for women, ranking No. 11 in the nation for the largest percentage of single-person female householders (23.1 percent). A tick over 15 percent of the city’s single-person householders are men.

“The city also appears to be getting lonelier. On average, the number of people living alone in Boston has increased 1.2% on average year-over-year since 2016,” researchers added.

The top 10 loneliest cities were Washington, D.C., St. Louis, Alexandria, Richmond, Cincinnati, Cleveland, New Orleans, Birmingham, Atlanta, and Baltimore.
