Arrest made in connection with fatal late-night shooting in Dorchester

BOSTON — An arrest has been made in connection with a fatal shooting in Dorchester Saturday night.

Mikai Thomson, 21, of Dorchester was arrested on murder charges Sunday afternoon for the death of 22-year-old Xavier Rivas, Boston police say.

Rivas was shot around 11:41 p.m. Saturday near Old Road and Michigan Avenue in Dorchester, officials say. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Thomson was arrested at Albert Street and Ruggles Street around 2:56 p.m. Sunday afternoon by members of the BPD Youth Violence Strike Force on a warrant out of Dorchester District Court for various firearm charges and assault and battery on a police officer.

Upon further investigation by Boston Police homicide detectives, Thomson was also charged with murder, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm in connection with Rivas’ death.

The shooting is still under investigation and the department’s homicide unit is actively reviewing the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident.

Thomson will be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on Tuesday morning.
