WELLFLEET, Mass. — A popular Cape Cod beach will be enforcing an alcohol ban this summer in effort to cut down on drunken visitors and other problematic issues that have surfaced in recent years, officials said.
Those who flock to Cahoon Hallow Beach in Wellfleet will be asked to refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages from May 20 through Sept. 10, according to the Town of Wellfleet.
“The Cape Cod National Seashore has agreed to make regulation changes in the Cahoon Hallow Beach area (north and south) for the prohibition of consumption of an alcoholic beverage and the possessions of an open container of an alcoholic beverage,” the town said in a news release.
The decision comes after officials say they have documented a 20 percent increase in visitation to the beach in every year over the last six years.
“The rise in traffic and visitation has resulted in an increase in excessive alcohol consumption, disorderly conduct including assaults, public intoxication, improper disposal of human waste, and drunk visitors staggering down Ocean View Drive or passing out in the Cahoon Hollow parking lot,” town officials explained.
Current regulation in Wellfleet states that it’s unlawful to consume alcohol on all town-owned property. Police say that regulation will continue to be enforced year-round.
