Amtrak cancels all long-distance trains amid potential rail worker strike

Amtrak announced that it will cancel all long-distance trains on Thursday because of a rail worker labor dispute that may cause workers to strike the following day.

While Amtrak is not involved in the labor negotiations, the vast majority of its railroads outside of the Northeast Corridor operate on the tracks maintained by the freight railroads embedded in the dispute. The freight workers and rail companies are attempting to reach a new deal by Friday.

According to Amtrak, Acela service between Boston, New York and Washington DC will not be impacted and there will be only minimal changes to Northeast Regional Services.

Amtrak’cancelations follow an announcement earlier this week to cancel 10 long-distance trains throughout the US in anticipation of the imposed Friday deadline.

Former Boston Mayor and current Labor Secretary Marty Walsh will be heavily involved in the negations.
