NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — A 19-year-old New Bedford man died after an early-morning crash Saturday, state police said.
Cameron Rodrigues, of New Bedford, was found in the middle of the road when first responders arrived to the off ramp of Route 140 North to Braley Road after getting a 911 call reporting a car crash around 2:30 a.m.
Rodrigues had serious injuries. Three bystanders provided medical help before he was brought to St. Luke’s Hospital where he died around 7 a.m.
The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office said that a preliminary investigation shows that Rodrigues was driving a 2019 Kia Optima along the off ramp. He drove on the grass on the left side of the road before hitting a tree. Other evidence at the scene indicates that he was ejected from his car after hitting the tree.
The DA’s office said it also believes that after the crash, an unknown driver drove down the off ramp and dragged Rodrigues to where he was found by a passing driver.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash, was driving in the area around 2:30 a.m. Saturday or may have information about the unknown vehicle to contact Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office at (508) 993-2016. Police are only seeking to speak with the unknown motorist at this time.
