18-year-old facing murder charges, among others, in fatal New Bedford shooting

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — An 18-year-old male is facing charges that include murder after a fatal shooting in New Bedford Friday, according to a release from the Bristol County DA’s Office.

Jon Zell, 18, was arrested Friday in connection to the shooting, which police are investigating as a homicide. Zell has been charged with the following:

  • Murder
  • Carrying an illegal firearm
  • Carrying a loaded illegal firearm
  • Discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building
  • 10 counts of armed assault with intent to murder

The alleged shooting happened on Lafrance Street in New Bedford Friday just before 10:30 a.m. 40-year-old Angel Cruz of New Bedford died at a local hospital following the shooting that also injured a second victim.

That other victim, a 32-year-old New Bedford man, is in stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital, the Bristol County DA said.

Zell will be arraigned Monday as state and local police continue to investigate the fatal shooting.
