NORTH TRURO, Mass. — A female great white shark named Marty is making waves off Cape Cod after becoming the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s first newly tagged shark of the 2026 season.
The 10-foot-long shark has been detected frequently off North Truro, with her acoustic tag pinging 15 times since July 16, indicating she has been actively patrolling Cape waters.
The shark’s name pays tribute to Marty, the popular robot that greets shoppers in Stop & Shop stores.
To celebrate the partnership, Stop & Shop is selling special plush versions of Marty dressed as a shark, with 20% of proceeds benefiting the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s research and education programs.
In addition to the fundraising effort, Stop & Shop has committed $10,000 to support the conservancy’s work studying and tracking white sharks off the Massachusetts coast.
Researchers use acoustic tags to monitor shark movements and better understand the behavior of great whites in New England waters, helping improve public education and conservation efforts along Cape Cod.
