1 cat dead, four people and another cat displaced after 2-alarm fire in Dracut, fire officials say

DRACUT, Mass. — A pet cat died and another cat was rescued after a 2-alarm house fire that displaced four people in Dracut on Sunday afternoon, fire officials said.

At 3:56 p.m., the Dracut Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a fire in a two-story, single-family home at 1317 Lakeview Ave.

When crews arrived at the home at 4 p.m., they found heavy fire showing from the front of the home. A second alarm was struck shortly after crews arrived.

The home’s balloon-frame construction allowed the fire to spread between walls, so firefighters had to cut open walls to reach all the flames, said Dracut Fire Chief Richard Patterson.

“Companies did a great job containing the fire to the two rooms in the kitchen and the breezeway,” said Patterson. “Companies were able to limit the fire damage throughout the rest of the house, though there was heat and smoke damage throughout.”

Fire damage was contained to the home’s kitchen and breezeway, but the home sustained smoke and water damage throughout.

Crews brought the fire under control at 5:42 p.m.

The displaced residents were staying with family members Sunday night, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters from the Lowell, Tyngsborough, Methuen, and Pelham and Hudson, New Hampshire fire departments provided mutual aid at the scene. Off-duty Dracut firefighters and Nashua, New Hampshire firefighters covered Dracut fire stations.
