BOSTON — Three homeless 10-week-old kittens born without eyelids will be getting sight-saving surgery at Angell Animal Medical Center.
The three kittens, now named "Marie," "Berlioz" and "Toulouse" were found outside in September and brought to the Randolph Animal Hospital before being transferred to MSPCA on Oct. 16.
The kittens were born with a very rare condition called agenesis, which means they were born without eyelids and are unable to blink. Without surgery, the kittens would ultimately go blind.
According to the MSPCA, "Angell Ophthalmologist Dr. Martin Coster will remove a sliver of tissue from two of the kittens' lower lips and transfer the tissue to the muscles that enable them to blink which, in effect, reconstructs the missing lids. The third kitten—whose condition is less severe—will undergo liquid nitrogen cryotherapy to create a smooth, hairless eyelid border."
Donations are being accepted for the surgeries.
Dr. Coster performed the surgery in 2014 on a kitten named "Phil," who recovered from his condition and is now a healthy and happy 4-year-old cat.
No owner has claimed the kittens.
MSPCA says it will announce availability for adoption when the comes.
