Impending storm throwing a wrench in Thanksgiving travel plans

(MyFoxBoston.com) -- Road crews and travelers are all gearing up for the holiday rush that is expected to really gain steam on Tuesday. In addition to regular holiday travel, the upcoming storm is speeding up a few plans.

At the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, they are working to prepare as people try to get a head start on travel.

Nearly 40 percent of Bostonians are traveling for Thanksgiving, and more than half of them will drive.

The approaching storm is definitely throwing a wrench into those travel plans, and getting home for Thanksgiving could be a challenge, especially if you're flying.

Mark DiPlacido is headed to Pennsylvania and is worried his brother still in Boston may not make it as people rush to leave.

"I'm flying out today, my brother is flying tomorrow. We'll see if he makes it before the wave comes," he said. "Tough to change when the weather hits."

A storm is headed up the coast for Wednesday, throwing a wrench into people's holiday travel plans. The coming storm is also forcing state officials to change up some plans.

Highway construction will shut down Tuesday instead of the usual Wednesday to keep the roads as open as possible.

People like Gianna Pico who are driving are concerned. She's headed out Tuesday to get a jump on the storm, but not the traffic.

Her drive usually takes her four and a half hours, but "it could take up to six with traffic, though, because everybody goes home," she said.

The one bright spot is a drop in gas prices, which are down nearly a dollar from last year, helping people pocket some cash, even if only a little.

Others headed to Logan a couple of days early.

Grace Jost was flying Monday and said experience has taught her weather means delays. Last year, she said she learned her lesson.

“There was just a slight bit of snow in the northeast and my flight was delayed.”
