SOMERVILLE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Some parents in Somerville were scrambling Wednesday morning after getting very late word that their school would not be open Wednesday. The school announced later in the day that they would not be open for another month.
Just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday night, a custodian went to check on a motion detector alarm at the Brown School on Willow Avenue. The custodian found part of the roof had collapsed in the first floor girls restroom.
The school superintendent sent out automated message calls and emails to parents just before 11 p.m. on Tuesday to let them know that class was canceled on Wednesday. Parents learned Wednesday afternoon that the school would be closed for the next month.
Somerville's mayor says the part of the roof that collapsed is a flat section but the rest of the school has a pitched roof.
The mayor says they are proactive at monitoring the amount of snow that piles up and are using drones to inspect city buildings.
City leaders have not said if snow or some sort of structural problem caused the partial collapse.
