BOSTON — Fifty of the nearly 500 undocumented immigrants arrested this week in a nationwide immigration operation were jailed in Massachusetts.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers targeted Lynn, Brockton, Boston and Worcester, along with other cities across the country in what was called “Operation Safe City."

The operation spanned four days, ending Wednesday, and focused on sanctuary cities.

A total of 498 people from 42 countries were arrested in several U.S. cities on federal immigration violations.

Most of the nearly the 500 people taken into custody have criminal convictions or pending charges, and nearly 20 percent had reentered the country after recently being deported, ICE said in a statement.

ICE detailed only one local case, in which an Indian citizen forced to register as a sex offender was arrested in Boston.

ICE said No one arrested this week was protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) - children whose parents brought them to the country and have received deferred action from deportation.
