BOSTON — Legendary hockey player Gordie Howe has died. He was 88.

Howe, known as "Mr. Hockey," was born in Canada and played 26 seasons in the National Hockey League, 25 of those seasons with the Detroit Red Wings.

Howe played with the Red Wings from 1946-1971 and is the second-leading scored in NHL history. Only Wayne Gretzky has scored more points than Howe.

Howe set many records during his lengthy career and is the only player to have played the sport in five different decades.

Howe suffered a significant stroke in October 2014 and was close to death. He received groundbreaking stem-cell treatment in Mexico as part of his recovery process, which extended his life beyond what many in his family thought was possible.

You can watch a tribute to Howe by FOX25's Tom Leyden in the player above. The tribute piece was produced in 2014 when Howe was close to death and many believed he might not recover.
