BOSTON — Monday marks a new milestone in Massachusetts’s coronavirus battle: The field hospital at the DCU Center in Worcester is going into hibernation again after the last patient is discharged Monday morning.
The DCU Center opened as the state’s first field hospital in April as COVID-19 cases climbed. The state reported 161 patients were treated at the hospital over the course of two months before it closed in late May.
But when the second surge came, the state reopened the facility in December. By mid-February, nearly 600 patients had been treated there. But patient numbers started to decline, and just as of last week, five patients remained at the facility.

Even as the Worcester field hospital winds down operations Monday, it will remain a “warm site”, meaning it can be reopened if cases spike after spring break.
