PLYMOUTH, Mass. — It’s been adapt, overcome and stay calm inside the Laughing Moon in Plymouth this year.

“We have been trying to put everything we can onto our online shop and we’re working on it, keeping it updated and getting orders every day,” said Jewelia Brown.

New COVID-19 rollbacks in Massachusetts shouldn’t affect retail stores much and, combined with new online sales, Jewelia Brown is hopeful heading into the holidays.

“I think it’s going to work out during wintertime even though COVID is here and still bringing a lot of businesses down, we are hoping to stay up and running,” Brown said.

Outside the Laughing Moon, ‘tis the season. For a top caterer on Cape Cod, a holiday party is a ghost of Christmas past.

“Who is going to have house parties for Christmas? Which I usually do a lot of, I just don’t think we are going to see that this year,” said Olive Chase, the president of The Casual Gourmet.

The new year is already stacking up to provide record-breaking sales “on paper” right now.

“Right now, [in] 2021 I have more weddings booked than I have ever seen before. Dates are pretty sold out and my weddings start in May. The questions become will we be able to do them in May and June?” Chase said.

The next question then becomes will the vaccine help people feel safe? If so, it’s then a race to get people inoculated and businesses like Chase’s back to life.

“That is exactly what is going to happen. Can your business hold on long enough until we begin to get to a point where people can feel comfortable going out, gathering celebrating?” Chase said.
