NEW YORK CITY (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A doctor in New York City tested positive for Ebola Thursday. He recently returned to the states after treating patients for the virus in Guinea.
Craig Spencer was taken to the hospital and quarantined while people he may have come in contact with are traced. So far, officials are aware of four including his fiancee, two friends and an Uber driver. They will be quarantined as well.
The 33 year-old doctor completed his work with Doctors Without Borders on Oct. 12 and returned to the US on Oct. 14. Officials say, he did not have symptoms while traveling. He started experiencing fatigue Wednesday night and then had a fever Thursday morning.
Before the symptoms set in, Spencer left his apartment and used public transportation. Officials say he rode the A train, 1 train and L train. However, on Wednesday night when he was feeling fatigued, he took the subway and then a cab to go bowling in Williamsburg. Officials say the virus is only able to spread when the patient is experiencing symptoms.
Spencer is now in isolation at Bellevue Hospital.
According to the doctor's LinkedIn profile, he is a fellow of International Emergency Medicine at Columbia University at the New York Presbyterian Hospital.
Three members of CDC's Ebola Response Team are on their way to New York City and expected to arrive Thursday night. CDC Ebola experts are already in the city to assist.
