DUXBURY, Mass. — It’s not easy to start a business. Especially if you’re a teenager. In a pandemic. But one South Shore teen isn’t letting that slow him down.

Fourteen-year-old Charlie Flaherty spends hours in Duxbury his basement, but not playing video games. The freshman at Duxbury High School recently launched his own candle-making business. It’s called Terre, which means Earth in French. Flaherty makes his own handcrafted soy candles with his small stove and a few pots in his workshop.

“A lot of our products are Earth-based in their style, in their simplicity and in their color schemes,” Flaherty said.

Like a lot of kids, Flaherty has had a lot of time on his hands during Covid-19. He’s heavily involved in acting, but all his rehearsals were canceled due to the pandemic. So a few months ago he launched his one-man business to keep himself occupied.

“He was very busy. He went from very busy to having nothing to do and so you know, I feel like he took advantage of an entirely different situation. So it’s not surprising based on who he is, but we’re incredibly proud of him,” said Flaherty’s mother, Rosemary Tufankjian.

Charlie has done everything on his own, from making the candles to designing the logo and even the branding.

“I created the labels, I created the website, I did everything from scratch and that was all thanks to quarantine,” he said.

The candles are 8 ounces and cost $25 each. If you are interested in the candles, click here.
