Gas leak prompts evacuation in Brighton

BRIGHTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) --A gas leak prompted evacuations in Brighton Monday.

Crews responded to the 1800 block of Commonwealth Avenue just before 12:30 p.m. Homes and apartment buildings in the area were evacuated.

The Boston Fire Department Tweeted that a backhoe removing a tree stump in front of 1867 Comm. Ave. hit and ruptured a four-inch gas line.

Gas was still flowing at 1:32 p.m. and National Grid responded to the scene to shut it off.

There were no injuries. Meter readings were negative gas in area buildings.

The outbound side of Commonwealth Avenue was closed from Chiswick Road to Chestnut Hill Ave. The B branch of the MBTA's Green Line was experiencing some delays.
