FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Surveillance video shows a grandmother and younger man make a scene in a jewelry store before making off with half of an expensive set of earrings.

The owner of Cindi’s diamond and Jewelry Gallery in Foxborough said the man and woman took one earring from a set valued at more than $8,000.

Cindi Haddad-Drew said when she saw the man walking around suspiciously, she thought enough to switch the door lock to try to prevent them from getting away.

"He was overdressed, wearing a heavier coat, red baseball cap, visibly shaking," she said.
The pair told an employee they needed a huge pair of diamond studs for grandma's big birthday, and even went so far as to ask for a calculator to figure out what the cost would be divided among the grandkids.

When Cindi offered to switch the backing off one of the earrings so they would sit up straighter on grandma's ear, she gave herself away.

"She says out loud, she's taking one earring, and he goes and he’s fumbling on her other ear to take out the other earring and hands me what looks like the earring but at a glance you could tell the difference,” Cindi said.

The lock on the door malfunctioned and the pair was able to walk out. When they were confronted by employees in the alley, the man was asked to empty his pockets. The pair ignored requests and took off in a white truck with a New Hampshire license plate.

Police say they’re now on the lookout for these robbers, who are possibly connected to the January heist where a $22,000 diamond was taken in a similar fashion from the same store.

Cindi says the loss may not be covered by her insurance, since it’s under the amount of her deductible.

She said she's hoping a wedding band sale this weekend will help recoup the losses.
