OXFORD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- An early morning fire in Oxford sent one person to the hospital and caused minor injuries to a firefighter, according to a statement from the Oxford Fire Department.
The fire department responded to a call just after 3:30 a.m. on Sunday at 49 Millbury Rd. All people in the home were able to get out of the building, though one person suffered burns and was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
In total, three adults and three children were displaced from the home, and volunteers from the American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts put them up in a hotel and provided them with money for clothing, food and winter coats, as well as gave slippers to those who ran out of the house without shoes on. Because there were no fire hydrants in the area, firefighters had to set up a water shuttle, according to Oxford fire officials. The lack of close water supply and cold weather that caused icing made it difficult to extinguish the fire, officials said.
The fire chief quickly called for a third and then fourth alarm, bringing in fire crews from neighboring towns including Webster, Auburn, Charlton and Millbury.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by Massachusetts State Police and the Fire Marshal's office.
