Firefighters surprise burn victim with birthday presents in the hospital

GROTON, Mass. — After a young girl was seriously burned after an accident in Groton, members if the fire department pulled together to help her with her recovery.

It was March 6, when 5-year-old Sophie sustained major burns over 40 percent of her body when a pot of boiling water spilled on her.

Firefighter Paul McBrearty and Lt. Jim Crooker were the first on the scene and helped care for Sophie until a medical helicopter could arrive.

She was taken to a Boston hospital where she has had many surgeries and is recovering.

When McBrearty and Crooker learned she would be spending her birthday in the hospital they decided to ask other members of the department to donate so they could buy her gifts.

“We learned that she may have to spend her sixth birthday in a hospital bed and knew that we could help,” Crooker said.

On March 23 the two men delivered $650 worth of birthday gifts to Sophie at the hospital along with a new iPad donated by Walmart.
