Firefighters responded to a manhole explosion in Melrose Friday, according to the Melrose Police Department.
The department confirmed they were responding to the explosion on Essex Street around 9 p.m., and that firefighters had cleared the scene.

National Grid released a statement Friday night on the incident, saying no gas or electric service was impacted in the area.
No one was injured by the explosion.
“Our National Grid gas and electric crews are on scene in Melrose in response to an incident earlier this evening involving a manhole," the statement read. "Neither gas nor electric service has been impacted to our customers in the area. We are currently investigating the cause, but have no indication this is gas related.”
In an updated statement Saturday morning, National Grid said crews responded to an incident with two manholes at the street.
“Last evening National Grid’s electric and gas crews responded to reports of an incident involving two manholes at Essex Street in Melrose," the updated statement read. "No customers are without power or gas in the area. No injuries were reported. We are currently on scene working to restore the manholes. We are investigating the cause of this isolated incident, but have no indication this is gas related. The safety of our customers, the communities we serve, and our employees is the number one priority of National Grid."
