Fire destroys historic Charlton winery

CHARLTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) -- A large fire destroyed part of a historic winery on Sunday night.

Flames broke out around 10:45 p.m. at the Charlton Orchards Farm and Winery, which is just south of Route 20 and the Mass Pike.

The Fire Marshal says the fire destroyed a majority of the corporate, retail and storage area of the winery.

"This was a new piece of the farm we had built and there were thousands of gallons of wine in there that's all gone now,” Nathan Benjamin Jr., one of the winery owners, said.

In addition to the wine itself, much of the equipment used to make it was destroyed.

State fire marshal Stephen Coan says the investigation into the cause of the fire is still in the preliminary stages.

The farm dates back to 1733, according to its website.
