Fentanyl found inside car in Chelsea prompts hazmat response

CHELSEA, Mass. — The Chelsea Fire Department's hazmat team was called in after an officer found a substance that included fentanyl in it, Chelsea Police Chief Kyes said.

At around 9:40 a.m. on Sunday, a Chelsea officer saw what looked like a car that had been involved in an accident in the area of 142 Broadway, just across from the police station.

The car's windshield had been damaged and had a flat tire as well. At this time, officials do not know exactly where the accident happened.

The only person in the car was a woman sitting in the driver's seat, told the officer there may be fentanyl inside the package.

After further investigating, the officer found hypodermic needles inside the car and a white, powdery substance inside a small package. The Chelsea Fire Chief later confirmed there was an overdose and that the white power was in fact drugs.

The driver was transported to the CHA in Everett for further treatment.
