CONWAY, Mass. — The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF1 tornado touched down near Conway, Massachusetts Saturday.
NWS said the tornado reached a speed up to 110 m.p.h., but most of the damage happened with 80 to 100 m.p.h.
Along with Conway, the tornado also touched down in Goshen, Massachusetts. The NWS said this is the first recorded February tornado in Massachusetts' history.
Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories:
- EF0...wind speeds 65 to 85 mph.
- EF1...wind speeds 86 to 110 mph.
- EF2...wind speeds 111 to 135 mph.
- EF3...wind speeds 136 to 165 mph.
- EF4...wind speeds 166 to 200 mph.
- EF5...wind speeds greater than 200 mph.
The Town of Conway, which is in Franklin County, declared a state of emergency Saturday night due to the damage from the storm, reports WGGB.
The Assistant Emergency Management Director told WGGB that many homes lost their roofs, and others had trees fall on their homes.
At this time, no injuries have been reported.
