Drivers frustrated after they say asphalt ruined their tires

(MyFoxBoston.com) -- FOX25 got several tips from viewers who were furious when they returned home to find their tires ruined by asphalt.

FOX 25's Heather Hegedus just finished talking to one of the drivers in Sharon and he says he was driving home from work on Route 1 in Sharon when he heard a strange sound coming from his tires, he even thought it might be a flat. So the man, Jim, pulled over and saw a bunch of rocks on Route 1 and other cars kicking them up.

It wasn't until he got home and put a flashlight on them that he discovered his tires were caked in some sort of tar agent that he says won't come off. He says it ruined his tires and also put some pits in his windshield.

And it turns out, not far from where Jim hit that tar agent, crews were paving on the Exit 9 on-ramp to Route 95 in Sharon.

When Jim got onto the highway, he noticed at least half a dozen other cars pulled over onto the side of 95, he thinks those cars might have been damaged too.

Jim says it was a very bumpy ride the rest of the way home and he could only go about 40 miles an hour because the whole car was vibrating from the tire damage.

Now, Jim hopes the DOT will reimburse him and hopes others will contact the department and let them know if it happened to them, too.

DOT Spokesperson Mike Verseckes said, "We are still looking into this situation but MassDOT has apprised its contractor in this area to ensure any and all work done to resurface is done in a manner that the site is secure during the work, as well as during the hours in which work is not taking place."

The DOT said if we put them touch with Jim, they'll work out with him whether they'll be able to compensate him. We'll certainly follow-up and keep you posted on that.
