A driver was arrested and taken to the hospital after leading police on a pursuit that led to multiple cars being struck in Hingham, police said.

Hingham Police tweeted about the incident, and said the call began as a medical emergency/wellfare check, which then led to a short pursuit.

"About 3 p.m. today, we got a call about a woman who needed a medical emergency, that she was suicidal and distraught," Hingham Police Sergeant Steven Dearth said. "She was in her vehicle, the officers got there, made contact with her and she pulled away."

A source tells Boston 25 News the 49-year-old woman from Kingston swallowed about 100 pills, and then drove away from police.

Police say the woman put other people in danger.

"There is traffic, people are leaving work, it's a busy time of day," Dearth said. "That's one of the ones we consider if we consider a pursuit or not. This was a case we had info that she was a danger."

Officers gave chase for about a mile in rush hour traffic, then the woman hit several cars, a police cruiser, took out a fire hydrant, a fence and then slammed into a tree before the SUV went up in flames.

Police later tweeted dash cam footage of the incident, as the driver leading the pursuit speeds away from police.

Police said there were no injuries to other drivers or officers in the incident.
