ARLINGTON, Mass. — Police are investigating after the person driving a stolen car was involved in a crash with a police cruiser and other vehicles on Mass. Ave. in Arlington Wednesday evening.
Arlington police tweeted about the crash around 5:45 p.m. and said it happened at Park Avenue.
An Arlington Police Inspector was conducting an unrelated investigation near the Germaine Lawrence School when he spotted a suspicious vehicle around 5:30 p.m.
A dispatcher confirmed that the vehicle had been reported stolen from Lawrence and officers around the city were notified. A patrol officer spotted the vehicle on Florence Avenue, but the driver did would not stop. Police say the driver hit an MBTA bus and police cruiser before stopping on Mass. ave.
"I am very grateful that nobody was hurt as a result of the recklessness that was on display in this case," Chief Frederick Ryan said. "I am proud of our officers for showing extraordinary poise when faced with an extremely dangerous situation."
A 16-year-old male was arrested and charged with receiving a stolen vehicle, negligent operation, unlicensed operation, failure to stop for police, leaving the scene of property damage (four counts), failure to stop at a red light (two counts), speeding, failure to stop at a red light and marked lanes violation.
Additionally, 19-year-old Isiah Smith of Lawrence and another 16-year-old male were arrested and charged with receiving a stolen vehicle.
The cause of the crash is unclear at this time, and it's unknown if anyone was injured. Police did say traffic in the area will be impacted while they investigate.
