STOUGHTON, Mass. — A 38-year-old Whitman man is facing charges after he was accused of driving under the influence when he hit a woman attempting to cross a Stoughton street Sunday night.

Police said the unidentified woman was crossing Park Street around 9:30 p.m. when she was hit by a van driven by Vario Martins.

The victim was taken to a Boston hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

The intersection where the woman was hit was closed for hours while police investigated the incident.

“All I know, he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, so we did a field sobriety test on him and took him into custody,” Stoughton police Lt. John Bonney said.

Martins faces charges including OUI, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and driving without a license.
