Driver arraigned after teen on bike killed in Dorchester hit and run

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A teenager on his bicycle was killed Tuesday after being hit by a car following a crash in Dorchester, and the man suspected of being responsible for that crash was arrested and arraigned Wednesday.

Two cars crashed at the intersection of Talbot and New England streets. A young man on a bike was struck during the collision. One badly damaged BMW remained at the scene while the second car fled.

Police say they found the second car on Wednesday morning. The suspect and driver of that car, 27-year-old Gregory McCoy of Dorchester, was arrested in his home less than a mile away from the scene of the crash.

At around 10 p.m. Tuesday, McCoy was allegedly driving without a license when his Cadillac hit the BMW with so much force, that 18-year-old Fritz Philogene was struck while crossing the street on his bicycle. Philogene was a high school sophomore and died from his injuries.

One witness, Cheline Garcia, says she heard the crash around 10 p.m. and rushed out to help. She performed CPR on the victim, who she said had a pulse but later died.

"The scene was just horrible. You can't even explain how bad it was," Garcia told FOX25. "He was breathing, he didn't know what was going on. I told him the paramedics were on the way."

Philogene's family was grief stricken in court Wednesday, and McCoy hid his face from the cameras.

"In a case like this you're still numb," said Christopher Graham, a family friend of Philogene's. "I'm still numb and it hasn't really hit yet.""

McCoy pleaded not guilty to motor vehicle homicide, and leaving the scene of an accident.

Two others were injured in the crash. Investigators say McCoy left his severely injured passenger in the Cadillac he was driving.

"In this case the defense fled the scene of the motor vehicle incident where bodies were literally laying across the intersection," said assistant district attorney Greg Henning.

McCoy's criminal record and it dates back to when he was a teen himself with charges for drug possession and assault and battery on a police officer. Most of the charges have been dismissed, but he is in default on a warrant out of West Roxbury District Court.
