HANSON, Mass. — Domino’s Pizza teamed up with the Hanson Fire Department to promote Fire Prevention Month and make sure everyone has a working smoke detector.
Randomly selected people who ordered Dominos Thursday evening were surprised when their pizza arrived on board a fire truck. Everyone who let firefighters inside and had working smoke detector got their pie for free. If their smoke detectors weren’t working, firefighters installed alarms or replaced batteries.
“We had one home that didn’t have detectors that worked,” Hanson Fire Lt. Charley Barends told Boston 25 News. “We’re working with the family to get those in working order.”
The other homes had working smoke detectors. Dominos paid for their orders.
“It’s great to have an organization that is supportive not only to the efforts of the Hanson Fire Department, but the community,” Lt. Barends said.
The goal is to stress smoke detectors save lives.
"The Fire Prevention Week program is a great way to educate customers about fire safety," Jenny Fouracre, a Domino's spokeswoman, said. "Every year, Domino's stores across the country look forward to teaming up with their local fire departments and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to spread fire safety messages in a fun and exciting way."
Dominos also donated pizza to the fire department’s open house this year.
- Learn two ways out of every room.
- Make a home escape plan. Draw a map of your home, showing all doors and windows. Discuss the plan with everyone in your home.
- Practice a home fire drill twice a year.
- Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can't help them.
- Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire.
- Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.
