DANVERS, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The demand for tighter security and more safety precautions is shutting down one of the biggest fireworks shows on the North Shore.
Danvers is not doing its show this year, leaving more than 30,000 people looking for another place to go.
Danvers resident Beth Lafortune said, "It was always just a big party. Always tons and tons of people. It was awesome to walk around."
It was the finale every year to the Danvers Family Festival, attracting people from all over the North Shore, but this year, it's not happening.
"Very depressing, very sad. Everyone I know is really upset about it because it was just always something we look forward to," Lafortune said.
Organizers canceled the fireworks permanently. The head organizer telling FOX25 News that increased security measures mandated after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings created huge costs and recent federal fireworks codes would limit the size of the mortars so the show would be lower on the horizon and trees would block it.
John Call of the Danvers Family Festival said, "So were paying more for security and safety than the fireworks themselves."
One of the new security measures since the bombings is the town would have to put a fence up all around the spectators, which could cost a lot of money.
The perimeter around the spectators also had to have limited entry points to the secure area, bag checks and bomb sniffing dogs sweeping the site at least two times before people could enter. Organizers say they decided to call it quits because the show everyone knew would have been compromised.
Call said, "If we can't put on that kind of show then why put on a diminished product that people are not going to like."
The Danvers Family Festival is hosting more free events like this one, but families looking for fireworks will have to find a new location.
Salem's mayor says they are bracing for the extra people they will likely see.
