MILTON, Mass. — A summer camp staff member at Curry College is being accused of sexually assaulting a fellow counselor on the school's campus.
Police say 50-year-old Mario Larrondo used his experience as a personal trainer to initiate physical contact with a counselor.
Larrondo faced a judge on Thursday night where he faced aggravated rape charges.
Not only is Larrondo being accused of rape but he is also facing the possibility of deportation. An interpreter was needed to explain the charges to Larrondo, who is originally from Cuba.
His most recent address is in Tampa, Florida, but investigators said that his position at the summer camp brought him up to Massachusetts.
Larrondo was arrested on Thursday after a camp counselor alerted school police to the alleged assault. According to prosecutors, Larrondo, a certified personal trainer, got her alone by asking her to do a workout and then allegedly took advantage of her.
“At one point he spread her legs and began to stretch her," said the prosecutor. "She indicated she couldn’t do that because of her hips. He said it would help. He then began to unbutton her shorts. She said, 'stop.' He kept calling her baby and repeating, 'yes.'”
Prosecutors allege Larrondo wouldn't take no for an answer and became increasingly aggressive.
Larrondo's attorney says he's still trying to figure out if there's more to the story and expects his client will remain locked up for the time being.
Prosecutors also said Larrondo has previously been convicted of drug offenses in both Florida and New York.
He is being held on $50,000 cash bail, which was set at Thursday's arraignment. If he's able to post bail, he's been ordered to stay in the state of Massachusetts until his next court date and away from Curry College.
MB Sports Camps, the company coordinating the six-week summer program at Curry, issued the following statement regarding these allegations:
We would like to inform you of an incident that allegedly occurred at Curry College between two of our staff members, after hours. The alleged victim is a counselor, and the alleged suspect is a night patroller. Both of these adult staff members are familiar with each other. As you know, the Norfolk County DA are investigating and we are supportive and cooperating 100%. We would like to express our sympathy to those that are involved in the situation and we hope that it is resolved in an expedient manner.
Correction: An earlier version of this story listed Larrando as a 'camp counselor.' According to the company running the camp, Larrando was hired as a 'night patroller' and was not a counselor. This story has been updated.
