LYNN, Mass. — Crews fought flames in Lynn Wednesday morning after a three-story home caught fire on Chestnut Street.
Firefighters were called to the scene around 3:30 a.m. FOX25 was told the fire appeared to have started on an outside porch. By 5 a.m., the fire had gone to three alarms.
Fire officials said that the nine people who live inside the home were able to make it out safely. A man who lives on the third floor told FOX25's Stephanie Coueignoux that he smelled the smoke and was able to go through the home and wake everyone up.
Crews were unable to make it inside the home because the roof started to collapse. According to the Lynn fire chief, the building is a total loss.
Officials told FOX25 the fire was caused by the "careless disposal of smoking material."
