Crash in Mattapoisett kills 2, including Fairhaven High School senior

MATTAPOISETT, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Two people were killed in a crash Monday night, and one of them was a senior at Fairhaven High School set to graduate in just a few days.

Just after 10:30 p.m., police responded to a car crash on Route 6 in Mattapoisett. Officers found a 2002 Saturn "with severe damage" and said it appeared the driver, 21-year-old Brooklyn Cody Rodrigues, was traveling west when she lost control of the car, hitting the curb.

The car then rolled over and came to a stop off the road.

Rodrigues and her passenger, 18-year-old Meghan Sargent, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Both were from Fairhaven.

Sargent's grandfather says she was his pride and joy.

Fairhaven High School graduation is scheduled for this Sunday afternoon, May 31. Grief counselors were reportedly at the school on Tuesday.

"With the unthinkable happens to a graduating student, the week prior to graduation...it's hit with the magnitude of feelings," said Fairhaven Superintendent Dr. Robert Baldwin. "And that's how we felt this morning."

Police say speed was definitely a factor in the crash.
