ORANGE, Mass. -- The judge handed down the harshest possible sentence to the man and woman convicted of murdering an elderly couple in Orange during a drug-fueled home invasion.
Both Brittany Smith and Joshua Hart were sentenced to two life terms without parole served consecutively, one representing the lost life of Joanna Fisher, 77, and the other representing the lost life of Thomas Harty, 95.
“To me its horrifying to know that his last words were in the company of these two worthless individuals, and his last words were you [expletive] [expletive],” Don Harty said.
There was anger and pain from the victims’ families, but not a single tear from Hart or Smith, even as they heard the voice of the man they killed with their bare hands in a recorded obituary that was played.
“I just want to thank Joanna for being such a great wife and being so good to me” Thomas Harty said in the recording.
Family members recounted the horrific deaths of their loved ones, who were brutalized and murdered over their car.
Investigators proved Hart and Smith planned the attack so they could flee the state and avoid charges from other crimes.
Harty was stabbed and suffocated to death, Fisher, who was wheelchair bound, had her throat slashed. She played dead and was found by a caretaker 15 hours later, but died of her injuries.
