Congressman blasts Dr. Phil interview with 'The Shining' actress

A psychologist-turned-congressman slammed TV's "Dr. Phil" for airing an interview with actress Shelley Duvall, best known for her role opposite Jack Nicholson in the 1980 thriller "The Shining."

Duvall, 67, tells Phil McGraw she is fighting mental illness and needs help.

Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Pennsylvania, watched footage of the interview and said Duvall's mental state made it impossible for her to consent to sharing her story with a national audience.

Duvall looks far different from her time as an actress.

She told McGraw she believes Robin Williams is alive and talked about alien implants in her body.

"This should not have been pursued or aired," Murphy said of the interview. "Ms. Duvall has a basic right to privacy and the way in which she was exploited for afternoon entertainment was appalling."

Murphy's statement adds to other criticism about the interview, including from Kubrick's daughter who tweeted it was "lurid and exploitive entertainment" and "appallingly cruel."

Spokesmen from CBS Television Distribution, which syndicates Dr. Phil, did not immediately return our request for a response.
