Community mourns loss of 2 Canton residents

CANTON, Mass. — "It's a tragedy. When I got up in the morning, I looked in the paper, I couldn't believe it," said Canton resident Ron Pozzo.

First, 6-year-old Kaleigh Kenyon, a playful, loving kindergartner, was struck and pinned in her own backyard by a limb that fell 30 feet above her head. She was about to make a snowman with her dad.

Nine hours after the accident and seven miles away, 48-year-old father of three, Tom Gunning suffered a fatal head injury after being struck by another snow-laden branch while cleaning off a hockey rink at home.

Family friend and referee Ron Pozzo officiated for Gunning, who was a coach and president of Canton Youth Lacrosse.

"He was a great great guy. He was a great kid. I liked him a lot," said Pozzo.

Friends of the Kenyons attended support sessions on Sunday at Kaleigh's school - Luce Elementary.

Though distraught, the community is coming together for both families, changing their Facebook photos to ribbons, honoring two lives lost far too soon.

Canton High School's hockey team dedicated their win to the families in a tweet Saturday night.

Nearly $30,000 in donations poured in to a GoFundMe account that will cover Kaleigh's funeral expenses.

Canton Police continue to urge residents to stay indoors if you can.
