BOURNE, Mass. — A 63-year-year-old tractor-trailer driver faces charges after crashing into a utility pole in Bourne, according to police.

The unidentified driver told Bourne police he was hauling 12,000 gallons of unleaded fuel on April 21 when a bird flew into his window and hit his head causing him to swerve and take out a utility pole on MacArthur Boulevard.

Luckily a driver behind the tractor-trailer had a dash cam that captured the dramatic incident, and because of the high-quality video police said they were unable to confirm the driver’s report.

The video showed the tractor-trailer slowly drifting to the right across several lanes of traffic instead of swerving like the driver told police.

The driver was charged with failure to stay within marked lanes and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

Massachusetts State Police assisted Bourne police with the investigation, and MassDOT assisted with debris and fuel cleanup.

Other companies assisted with repairing the damaged poles and fire hydrant.
