Catholic group requests new name for St. Patrick's Day parade after inclusion of LGBT groups

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The Catholic Action League is requesting that the name of St. Patrick's Day parade in Southie be changed after the announcement that LGBT groups will be marching.

The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts asked the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council, organizers of the city's Saint Patrick's Day Parade, to remove the saint's name from the event. This comes after the second homosexual activist group, Boston Pride, said that they will be marching in the parade. The OutVets were told they could march in December.

As LGBT groups join in, Catholic organizations are opting out. The Immaculate Heart of Mary School withdrew in February and the State Council of the Knights of Columbus decided not to participate Friday.

"Call it the Evacuation Day Parade. Call it the South Boston Irish Pride Festival. Call it whatever you want, but don't debase the name of Saint Patrick by associating it with the tawdry circus that will take place on Broadway tomorrow." Catholic Action League Executive Director C. J. Doyle said in a recent release.
