Cat up for adoption after surgery to remove hair tie 'mountain'

BOSTON — After consuming a "mountain" of hair ties, a Siamese cat is on its way to recovery, thanks to MSPCA-Angell.

"Kitty" was admitted to the animal center Sunday after eating hair ties, at least 14 of which had become lodged in his stomach and intestines.

In the two hour surgery at the Angell Animal Medical Center, doctors discovered five centimeters of intestines were destroyed by the twisting and turning of the ties.

"The foreign body had nearly perforated Kitty's intestine and he could have died if the surgery had been delayed," said Dr.  Emma-Leigh Pearson.

Kitty was surrendered to the MSPCA by his owner, who had already been trying to re-home the cat. The MSPCA said this story shows the importance of keeping dangerous items away from pets. The MSPCA said every year they remove sewing needs and thread, yarn, socks and plastic bags from pets.

Kitty will be up for adoption by March 14 and anyone who is interested can email adoption@mspca.org  or visit the Boston adoption center in Jamaica Plain. The MSPCA said Kitty is 7 years old, sweet-natured and very friendly. His prognosis is excellent and will live a full life.
