SANDWICH, Mass. — Two people have been killed after being hit by a car in Sandwich, state police tell Boston 25 News.
The crash happened around 1:45 p.m. on Route 6A in the area of Market Square.
Both pedestrians were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.
The victims were both women, one age 88, the other age 70, and according to police they were in a crosswalk when they were hit by a vehicle driven by a 54-year-old Foxborough man. It's unclear at this point if the women had the light to cross, or if traffic had a green light.
“It’s absolutely horrible like every place this is a wonderful community and it’s a very tight knit community and to have something like this is just tragic,” Scott Savin said.
Shoppers said the plaza is popular for senior citizens who often walk there to get errands done.
“They’re just going doing their shopping just picking up what they need to pick up and meeting friends and they walk together,” Pat Sullivan said.
Sandwich police said the crash is under investigation. The driver did stop at the scene but was brought to the hospital as a precaution. It's unclear if he will face charges.
