CAMBRDIGE, Mass. — A Cambridge Police officer shot him or herself in the leg Thursday afternoon outside police headquarters, according to the department.

Spokesperson Jeremy Warnick said the officer was taken to the hospital for treatment of a leg injury and is in good condition.

Shortly after noon, the veteran officer's firearm "accidentally discharged" outside the Public Safety Building in Cambridge on Sixth Street. Warnick said the officer was returning from lunch and the gun went off while he was getting out of his personal car.

Police have not said whether the shot was a result of an apparent malfunction or mishandling.

The department spokesperson said the officer has been with Cambridge Police for 20 years. The officer has not yet been identified.
