Quincy Medical Center to close at year's end

QUINCY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Quincy Medical Center will be closing on December 31, Steward Health Care System, which runs the center, announced on Thursday.

In its place will be a "more sustainable outpatient" healthcare center, and the addition of a 24-hour emergency department. Also, in a separate location in Quincy will be an urgent care center and specialty clinic that includes X-Ray, ultrasound and mammography services.

"While Quincy Medical Center earns top quality and safety ratings, competition from Boston-area medical centers...and precipitously declining inpatient volume have made QMC unsustainable," said Mark Girard, president of Steward Hospitals in a statement.

Girard went on to say that administrators are working with the local healthcare workers' union and all employees at the medical center to move employees "to other positions in the Steward system or to provide training to facilitate better opportunities."

All employees will be paid for the next 60 days, according to a press release from Steward, and they will be offered "comprehensive support services."

Steward also runs other local hospitals including Norwood Hospital and Carney Hospital in Dorchester.
