BOSTON — Starting Monday morning we could see the worst delays so far from the ongoing Comm Ave. Bridge Project, and MassDOT is warning everyone to prepare for commutes to be extended by up to 90 minutes.
The westbound side of the Massachusetts Turnpike remained open for the weekend, and only one eastbound lane was open.
However, MassDOT says an additional lane eastbound lane was opened at 5 a.m. for the Monday morning commute to help ease the congestion.
That lane will be closed again at 7 p.m.
Still, the two eastbound lanes are just half of what is normally available in the Allston area, and MassDOT says commutes, no matter how you’re getting into the city, could be extended by an extra hour and a half.
"It impacts literally every single mode of transportation, whether you're taking Green Line, Amtrak or Commuter Rail, or driving in over the bridge, it will impact you in some way or another," said Acting Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver.
The 50-year-old bridge under construction connects Comm. Avenue and the BU Bridge, hosts Green Line tracks and sits over Commuter Rail tracks, as well as the Mass. Pike.
“If you have someplace you need to be at on time, give yourself a lot of extra time,” Gulliver said.
This is only the first phase of the Comm Ave. Bridge Project and is expected to last through Aug. 14.
The next phase of the project is slated to begin next summer.
