75-year-old woman dies after being hit by Brockton Police cruiser

BROCKTON, Mass. — A pedestrian hit by a marked Brockton Police cruiser on Tuesday afternoon has died, according to the Plymouth County DA’s office.

Officials said the crash happened in the area of 706 Main Street at around 4:17 p.m.

According to authorities, the officer in the cruiser had been responding to an emergency and was driving with the cruiser’s emergency system activated when it struck the pedestrian.

The victim has been identified as 75-year-old Maria Graca of Brockton.

The officer immediately stopped his vehicle, reported the incident, and administered first aid to the victim.

Graca was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

"It’s obviously heartbreaking, I believe bad for the police officer I’m sure they did what they could to avoid it but sometimes accidents happen," said Nick Schneider.

State Police continue to investigate the incident.
